My husband and I travelled to England at the beginning of the month for him to play soccer (football), but I managed to squeeze some bookish things into the trip as well. We had sunny weather the whole time and completely missed out on the dreary English weather we were promised.
No day is complete without a latte. And if there are croissants on offer, they should be sampled as well.
We spent most of our visit in Manchester, where we visited pubs, museums, and coffee shops, walked around downtown, and watched some great soccer.
John Rylands Library in Manchester. Currently celebrating 125 years as a library. It was gifted to the city by Enriqueta Augustina Rylands in memory of her husband.
While it has been featured in many films and television series, it was never featured in the Harry Potter movies, though it was supposedly used as inspiration for Hogwarts.
I could’ve wandered around this library all day. There were people set up with their laptops in quaint alcoves working, and I don’t know why anyone in Manchester would choose to work anywhere else.
A beautiful lamp display in downtown Manchester.
We only had one day in London, so we power-walked nearly twenty kilometres to see as many sights as we could. Luckily, there are familiar landmarks all over the city. While we saw all the big ones, we took little detours to see some lesser known spots, as well.
Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London.
Harry Potter’s magical Platform 9 3/4.
The flagship home of Twinings tea on The Strand in London. So English.
I’m not sure what this place was, but I’m sure, they make potions inside.
The British Library in London holds over 170 million items, including handwritten Beatles lyrics and the Magna Carta.
Wherever you are, I hope you’re enjoying spring weather and good books. I got lots of reading and writing time in on the flights, so I’ll report on what I read in May soon.
